Now, this is an adventure in Oz we need to see! This time, NBC’s The Wiz brings an exciting adaption from L. Frank Baum’s classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz — filled with good music and familiar characters that’ll make you want to go down that yellow brick road.
Orange Is The Black’s Emmy Award-winning actress Uzo Aduba has been cast to play Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, who will help Dorothy on her journey home. Glee‘s Amber Riley is also confirmed to play Addaperle, Good Witch of the North — and Glinda’s sister!
While folks may have caught Riley busting out her musical talents on Glee as Mercedes Jones, the upcoming project will be bringing Aduba, best known as ‘Crazy Eyes’ on OITNB to her broadway roots as she had been in both Coram Boy in 2007 and Godspell in 2011.
The freshly casted good witches join Queen Latifah who will be portraying the famous Wiz; Mary J. Blige who is taking on the role as Evillene (the Wicked Witch of the West); Elijah Kelley as the Scarecrow, Ne-Yo as the Tin Man, David Alan Grier as the Cowardly Lion and newcomer Shanice Williams as Dorothy.
Williams, 18, was chosen out of hundreds of hopefuls who participated in a nationwide open-casting call for this upcoming NBC musical production.
Back in 1978 a similar concept to the upcoming The Wiz Live! was made into a film that starred Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Richard Pryor and Lena Horne.
You’ll be able to Aduba, Riley, Latifah, Blige and folks work their magic when The Wiz Live! debuts on December 3.
And if you need some Wizard of Oz themed viewings, we’ve included Todrick Hall’s ‘The Wizard of Ahhhs’ here for your convenience.
