Some stars feel they have so much talent that it’s not enough to be a celebrated actor or actress, or even a famous…reality star, OK maybe that one we get. Crossover acts are not a new phenomenon, with many stars through the ages seeing the potential in their already well-known names to grant them success in other industries. Some have enjoyed great achievements with such endeavours, like Elizabeth Taylor and her perfume empire, ‘White Diamonds’ while others haven’t been quite so lucky (we’re looking at you Mariah Carey — remember Glitter
One of the more common career moves for silver screen stars seems to be taking a crack at the music biz. The following are our picks for top 10 celebs that went from behind the camera to behind the microphone
1. Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson made her first musical attempt with the 2008 album, Anywhere I Lay My Head
, which was comprised of 10 Tom Waits covers and one original song. While the record received mixed reviews Johansson has preserved and just this February formed a band with Esta Haim, from popular sister act Haim, and three others called The Singles
. Only one week into their band life, however, Johansson and the girls of new The Singles
are involved in legal issues
, after Vincent Frederick, lead singer of the L.A. based band The Singles
served them with a cease-and desist letter.
2. Lindsay Lohan
While Mean Girls
star Lindsay Lohan has struggled to find her place in the fashion world
she actually managed to gain some traction with her music career. Lohan’s 2004 album Speak
peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200
and went onto hit platinum in record sales. The sometimes-troubled starlet had respectable success with the follow up record, A Little More Personal (Raw)
and began work on a third album in 2007, though it was never completed. Lohan has since expressed an interest in creating EDM (electronic dance music).
3. Robert Pattinson
star Robert Pattinson has been ultra subtle about his other passion, quietly producing music that has found its way onto the soundtracks of several films, including Twilight
and How to Be
. While the heartthrob has made no announcement for upcoming records he has stated, “Music is my backup plan if acting fails.”
4. Bruce Willis
Bruce Willis, or Bruno Radolini, which was his musical alter ego, burst onto the music scene with the album The Return of Bruno
in 1987. While the singles from the record, ‘Respect Yourself’’ and ‘Under the Boardwalk’ earned chart listings in the US and UK, his follow up albums didn’t fair so well. Willis hasn’t produced an original album since 1989’s ironically titled, If It Don’t Kill You, It Just Makes You Stronger
5. Billy Bob Thornton
Billy Bob Thornton has made a concerted effort over the past few decades to be a part of the music world, even briefly working as a roadie. His best attempt so far perhaps, has been with the band The Boxmasters
. However, it’s been the actor’s now notorious fight with former CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi
that’s unfortunately garnered the most attention to his music career thus far.
6. Jennifer Love Hewitt
star, Jennifer Love Hewitt, has successfully been in the music game nearly as long as she’s been acting. Hewitt became a pop star in Japan at the age of 12 with the album Love Songs
. Since that time the Criminal Minds
actress has had varying degrees of success, with her biggest being 2002’s ‘BareNaked’. Hewitt has been mostly inactive in the music game since, excluding the 2013 cover song, ‘I’m A Woman’ which got her into the top ten on another list…the iTunes Music Video chart.
7. David Hasselhof
alum David Hasselhof may have struggled to maintain a name for himself in Hollywood, but through it all he’s been enjoying a successful music career in Germany
8. Taylor Momsen
Taylor Momsen rose to fame as Jenny Humphrey in the hugely popular series, Gossip Girl
. However, following the completion of the show’s forth season the young star famously announced to Elle magazine that she had quit acting to focus on her music career. Momsen’s band, The Pretty Reckless
have achieved notable success, hitting number one on US and UK rock charts. They’ve toured with acts such as Marilyn Manson and Evanescence
and are currently opening for Nickelback
on the North American leg of the band’s “No Fixed Address Tour”.
9. Paris Hilton
Infamous socialite and reality star Paris Hilton has had her hand in many pots, from fragrances to fashion to mobile apps, but the Simple Life
star has found her niche recently in music. While Hilton’s first album, Paris
(2006), received mixed reviews it did gain notable commercial success, peaking on the Billboard 200
at number 6. Hilton has since forged an incredibly successful career for herself as a DJ, getting booked to perform at shows around the world. Hilton has since released three singles from her upcoming sophomore album, with the song ‘Come Alive’ garnering success from critics and fans.
10. Jared Leto
Already gaining momentum in what would turn out to be a highly successful acting career, Jared Leto proved he was no one-trick pony, forming the band Thirty Seconds to Mars
in 1998. Consisting of Leto’s brother Shannon Leto and Tomo Miličević, Thirty Seconds to Mars
has achieved critical and commercial success and as of September 2014 has sold over 15 million albums worldwide.
