Avril Lavigne opened up to People magazine about why she’s been out of the spotlight
for the last few months, and the reason is shocking. The Canadian songstress has been bedridden with a severe case of Lyme disease.
She started noticing symptoms while celebrating her 30th
birthday in Las Vegas last year.
“I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed. My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know.”
She was later diagnosed with Lyme disease, a bacterial infection transmitted via tick bites.
“I had no idea a bug bite could do this. I was bedridden for five months. I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move. I thought I was dying. There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand. It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”
Lavigne was in good hands during this ordeal. She stayed with her family in Ontario, Canada and her husband, Nickelback front man Chad Kroeger, often checked on her.
Now that the star is recovering she has a new outlook.
“This was a wake-up call. I really just want to enjoy life from here on out.”
This news comes at the same time as fellow-Canadian Joni Mitchell’s hospitalization. The 71-year-old was rushed to the hospital yesterday but so far there is no word on why.
