2015 Billboard Music Awards roundup

T Swift Billboards

The 2015 Billboard Music Awards have come and gone and just as we predicted it was a Swizzling success story. This year’s ceremony was broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Amidst a night of hot performances and even hotter ensembles there was still some time left for the awards themselves. While Swift didn’t take home all 7 awards we predicted back in April, she instead walked away with 8 wins in total, including Top Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, and the fan-voted prize. Another big winner for the night was Sam Smith, who took home 3 statuettes, stealing Top Male Artist from our beloved Toronto boy, Drake and nabbing the Top New Artist category. Unfortunately Smith couldn’t make it to the Vegas affair in person due to recent vocal surgery. Other multiple winners included Pharrell and Iggy Azalea, both taking home 3 awards and One Direction, John Legend and Meghan Trainor each with 2 wins. While there were loads of delightfully entertaining tidbits throughout the 3 hour affair we’ve managed to narrow down our top 5 fav moments for your quick recap pleasure.
  1. Mariah was a vision of her past, present and future
Mariah Carey Billboards Mariah Carey dazzled the Billboard audience, despite reportedly missing her dress rehearsal, she managed to bring the house down with her knockout performance. Carey performed a medley of old and new with her 90s hit ‘Vision of Love’ and newest release, ‘Infinity’. The 45 year-old industry veteran had the crowd on their feet as she belted out the last impressive notes to ‘Vision of Love’. Carey was right at home at the Vegas venue as she is currently several weeks into her two-month long residency show, Mariah Carey #1 to Infinity, at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.
  1. One Direction does not forget their brother Zayn
One Direction Billboards The boys of 1D appeared at the BBMAs in their new iteration as a foursome and seemed to be in great spirits despite the recent exit of former member Zayn Malik. The ‘Live While You’re Young’ singers took home the award for Top Touring Artist, beating out The Rolling Stones and Kate Perry. Harry Styles was so excited about the win that he surprised fellow member Niall Horan with a cheeky crotch grab as they made their way to the stage. But the boys didn’t let the wins or the celeb-infused affair cloud their memories of their dearly departed band mate, including him in their acceptance speech as they collected their first award of the night, Top Duo/Group.
  1. Sam Smith melts our cynical hearts
Sam Smith Billboards While the ‘Stay With Me’ singer couldn’t stay with us through the entire BBMAs, Sam Smith made a heartfelt impression on audience members and fans alike by pulling a page from the movie Love Actually and silently expressing his gratitude on hand written note cards. “Thank you to my amazing fans,” he wrote. “It’s times like this that I realize how lucky I am to have you in my life.” Smith also gave a shout-out to his famous friends in the audience that night, including Taylor Swift, who he asked to “put 100 dollars on black” for him.
  1. Kanye rages through the censors…and the smoke
Kanye Billboards The last and always controversial performer of the night was none other than Kanye West. Singing two songs, ‘All Day’ and ‘Black Skinhead’ West could barely be seen or heard through his performance due to an excess of smoke machines and bleeped-out curse words. Billboard’s news director, Shirley Halperin has officially defended the rapper’s much jeered act, stating, “News flash: As in all things Kanye, his creativity comes with a purpose… perhaps the intention was to take the focus away from the celebrity of Kanye — the person we associate with the Kardashian clan and insulting Taylor Swift — and encourage an audience to listen rather than gawk.”
  1. T-Swift kills it (while kissing a bit)
T Siwft Calvin Harris Love her or hate her you gotta give the girl props. Taylor Swift swept this year’s BBMAs, taking home the same numbers of awards as she did only two years ago. Swift had many opportunities to spread thanks throughout the night, but we loved her speech while accepting the award for Billboard 200 album for 1989, stating “you guys embraced change, embraced me doing something new. I’ll never forget it.” Swift also embraced something throughout the night…her rumoured new boyfriend and date for the evening, Calvin Harris, whom she could be seen hugging and kissing before each of her wins. And if all of that wasn’t enough excitement for one night Swift debuted her new video for the remixed song ‘Bad Blood’. Check it out and get a complete run-down on the action-packed vid here.
